Mrs.
Gordon’s and Mrs. Jaquett’s Third Grade Classroom
News
AR requirements: Two chapter books with at least 70 pages that
have a reading level of 3.0 or higher. May 9 (the date was extended, per Mrs. Sweat)
is the last day to take the test. The lab will be open on Wednesday after
school.
The Spelling words this week are Unit 34 in the Spelling book.
The children have the words in their spirals. The children are writing their
test in cursive. We have been working on cursive and some children are still
having difficulty forming some of their letters, such as: m,n,u,w,,a,o. If these are not formed correctly on the
tests there are points taken off.
In English we are going to learn dictionary skills.
This week in Math we will continue our unit on measurement. We
will make “Gallon Man” this week.
We are finding that many
children have only learned the multiplication facts for each quiz and are not
retaining them. PLEASE practice the facts nightly if your child is weak and at
least twice a week if your child seems to know them. One of the biggest
complains that the fourth through eighth grade teachers have is that the
children do not know their fact. These are the stepping stones to all other
Math that they will encounter. We cannot stress this enough. We have listed two
websites (below) that are really good and one of them even has a timer.
In Social Studies this week we will learn how to use an atlas
and about the regions in the United States.
In Science we are discussing the solar system. We are beginning
to do our research on a planet. Starting with this quarter when the children
work on their workbooks they will be given to Mrs. Gordon and a grade will be
taken. You will be notified of the grade on a small piece of paper if the page
cannot be torn out. If it is a S&R this will be
circled.
For Reading we will go back to our reading books. The story we
are reading this week is a continuation of Ramona. It is called: Ramona Age
8.
Our last book report is one the children love doing. They will
need to read a CHILDREN’S cookbook, select a recipe, make it, and share
with the class. Information is enclosed in this week’s paper packet. The
children have also written their date in their assignment book.
We will be teaching your child how to write in cursive this
year. Some children struggle with handwriting in general due to lack of fine
motor skills. One of our parents (Belkis White) is an
occupational therapist and specializes in handwriting. This year she is doing
some volunteer work to help some of our students. Parents who may want or need
her services can reach her at: 338-8744. Her website is: www.ablehandstutoring.com
We have added a textbook login after the chart at the bottom.
These will help you and your child with additional games and information for
each of their textbooks. We hope that you will use this information.
Studying the math facts nightly for at least 15 minutes and
using these two websites: www.aplusmath and www.aaamath may help your child. Both sites
have games and worksheets. Another site we have found that has word problems
is: www.manatee.k12.fl.us/sites/elementary/palmasola/mathlab.htm When you get to this
site there are several options. Click on Problem Solving Sheets, and then
scroll down to third grade and select the first category which has the word
problem sheets. We hope that you will use this site if your child is struggling
with word problems. A good site to work on the times tables
is: http://math.about.com/cs/arithmetic/a/timestables.htm
When we are learning about time a web site you might want to use
with your child is: http://classroom.jc-schools.net/basic/math-time.html
This has both interactive activities as well as
worksheets you can print out. There is also one for elapse time, which we will
study this year. It is: http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/elab2002/grade_3/018.html
Each week we will be including a table at the bottom. This table
will have suggestions for home use to help you to help your child form better
study habits. This chart will go along with the test schedule on the paper
packet.
